A Little Overly Cautious Are We?

A couple of mornings ago I ran into the local bakery to grab some donuts for Angie and I.

In all I chose four little tasty morsels of cellulite goodness, which came to about $3.50 total.  Being short on cash, I had grabbed Angie’s Visa debit card on the way out the door as a means of payment.  I handed the little plastic magnet for NSF fees to the girl who’d bagged my order.

She took it in her hand and eyeballed the name on the card.  “Is this your wife’s card?” She queried in an unimpressed, annoyed tone.  Other than one other worker, we were the only ones in the small shop.

“Yeah it’s my fiance’s,” I said unassumingly.  I really didn’t expect any resistance over a four dollar transaction.

“I’m sorry I can’t take this.”  She extended her arm to hand the card back to me.

Being naturally irritated by this, I started to argue, but immediately realized that I was wasting my time.  This 19 year old girl was hellbent on securing the safety of her minimum wage job by egregiously disregarding common sense and basic customer service.

So I dug into my emergency cash that I always keep stashed in my wallet, paid for the donuts and left.

The whole thing got me to wondering what they could possibly be worried about.  Who in their right mind would try to use a stolen credit card to buy such a measly item, in the place where they are absolutely the most likely to run into a cop?
